BeskrivelseA set of 10 prints in a folder, by artist and holocaust survivor - Joseph Bau, depicting scenes from a Nazi concentration camp. The artist, who was at school in Krakow in 1939 with donor's husband, gave it to the donor the the latter visited him in Israel. The artist Joseph Bau was born in Krakow 1920, died in 2002 was one of survivors in "Schindler's Arc".
According to Joseph Bau’s official website (http://www.josephbau.org/) this print is titled ‘Rebecca and Joseph’s Wedding’. In the drawing are three people, Rebecca, Joseph and presumably Joseph’s mother. The woman in the centre is most likely Joseph’s mother and she is holding a bucket, whilst Joseph is holding a spoon and a bowl full of food. Rebecca and Joseph were married secretly in Plaszow concentration camp on February 13 1944. Joseph had saved four days of bread rations which he traded for a silver spoon, and then saved four days of bread and gave the slices to a jeweller who made two rings from the spoons. They arranged for a day, and on February 13 when the women were returning from work, Rebecca whistled as they passed through the men’s camp, and after putting on a headscarf, Joseph slipped between his mother and Rebecca. Joseph and Rebecca were married beside his mothers bunk, and went to Rebecca’s barracks. That night, the barracks were being searched for men, and Joseph was lucky not to be caught as Rebecca and her friends were able to hide him beneath a pile of rags on their bunk. He managed to get back over to the men’s camp by climbing over the fence. The wedding is dramatised in Schindler’s List.
