BeskrivelsePink and white check apron with pocket. This apron was made by Gertrud Lubo. She recalls; “In those days every woman wore an apron. As soon as you went in the house, you would put on your apron.”
Gertrud Lubo was born in Germany in 1914 and immigrated to Australia in 1939 at age 25 with her husband Peter. They settled in Glebe where Gertrud earned money house cleaning and as a cook. Her first business was making macramé shopping bags. She employed 12 people making string bags during the war. She and Peter bought machines and made aprons from a room in Rawson Chambers called Peter Lubo Pty Ltd, expanding the apron business and moving to a larger space in Oxford Street when Rawson Chambers burned down. They employed 18 people in their factory. They sold to David Jones, Woolworths, Grace Bros. as well as all the small shops around Sydney and Melbourne. The business closed in 1960.
Gertrud passed away aged 103 in 2017.
This apron was previously featured in 'Dressing Sydney: The Jewish Fashion Story'. Dressing Sydney presented a snapshot of the impact of the Jewish people on the predominantly post-1945 Australian garment and fashion industry, or schmatte business, as it is known in Yiddish.
