Before the outbreak of the war in September 1939, the prisoners at Neuengamme concentration camp were almost exclusively German. When the war began most of the people deported had been arrested as resistance fighters or hostages in the occupied countries of Europe. A list of the countries of origin of the prisoners is given. Among the registered prisoners were around 13,000 Jewish and around 500 Roma and Sinti
