الوصفKippah, was made by Paulette Szabason Goldberg in 2002. It was made for the 70th birthday of the late Michael O'Brien, husband of the donor, Shelley Phillips O'Brien. It is made in Bukhari-kippah style, with a characteristic flat top and higher attached sides. Dark purple velvet was skilfully hand-embroidered with gold-like thread and colourful glass beads. A Star of David created out of golden sequins and beads decorates the top of the kippah.
Paulette was interested in fashion all her life and always wanted to create 'Jewish things'. However, she only turned to Judaica when she retired. It was a nun who taught young Paulette to sew when she was only five or six years old....and "that was the start of my sewing". A child Holocaust survivor, Paulette emigrated from Holland in January 1950 on the Volendam ship.
Kippah, also known as yarmulke is the most commonly recognized piece of Jewish clothing reflecting a personal religious observance. It is usually a fabric skullcap which can take many shapes, fashion and patterns which is worn in public by Orthodox Jewish men or during prayer by other Jewish men.
