المنشيء Rabbi Leib Falk (maker)
الوصفStar of David emblem made by Rabbi Leib Aisack Falk. It was fashioned from a brass artillery shell case when he was chaplain of the 38th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers in Palestine, 1918.
The emblem was affixed to a portable ark which housed the Battalion’s Torah. Both ark and star were transported with the Battalion throughout the Palestine campaign.
Leib Aisack Falk was born in 1889 in Russia. Influenced early on by the teachings of Rabbi Kook, he moved to Scotland in 1911 and was the minister of Dundee from 1912-15. Following service at Plymouth, England, he became Chaplain to the Royal Fusiliers from 1918-21.
In 1922 Rabbi Falk travelled to Sydney, Australia with his family. He took a position at the Great Synagogue and is renowned for his fiery pro-Zionist sermons, his scholarship, artistic ability and Judaic library.
In the file is the brass plaque made to accompany the object.
