The map, engraved in Waltham, Massachusetts, 1649, is as much biblical history as geography. It depicts, amongst other illustrations, Jerusalem and Jericho, the Children of Israel crossing the Jordan, and the Patriarch Jacob's dream of angels on the ladder ascending to heaven. The Promised Land was initially divided amongst the twelve tribes of Israel.
