After a warning by neighbours that the Gestapo had returned to their house, the couple as well as Eva's parents, fled to Budapest. They continued to live as Catholics for the duration of the war. In 1947, Simon changed his name to Adamek. He also requested to change his name from Simon to Stefan, but this was denied. The family received their visa to travel to Australia in mid-1949 and booked passage on the Sebastian Cabota to Sydney. Sponsored by JOINT, the family were able to establish themselves in Sydney by August 1949.
