العنوانPhotograph of Molonglo Internment Camp, c.1918
الوصفPhotograph of the Molonglo Internment Camp, near Canberra circa 1918.
The camp was built to house prospective internees coming to Australia from the British Government. Whilst this did not eventuate, it would instead house 150 families from Bourke internment camp which has closed at the beginning of 1918.
Those interned included individuals who had been detained in British colonies such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and New Guinea.
This photograph was in the possession of Berta Morgenstern who wrote a diary during her travels and eventual internment as an enemy alien at Bourke internment camp, New South Wales. The diary is written by a teenager concerned with social elements such as friendships and interactions with fellow internees. Throughout she also mentions conditions and different activities undertaken at the camp. She was transferred to Molonglo camp in May 1918.
She begins the diary with 'Possession of Berta Morgenstern (in a prison-of-war), Bourke Detention Barracks, Australia.' It is dated the 3 May 1916 and finishes with a postscript from 1959 where she states; 'Very many, many years have moved on since I wrote my last lines. I am a 60 year old woman now...'
