By tradition the bride and groom refrain from seeing each other for a week prior to the wedding. The bride and groom meet again surrounded by the rabbi and family as witnesses to read and sign the Ketubah. The couple then meet again under the chuppah, a wedding canopy dating back to the tent-dwelling Jewish nomadic days in the desert. Historically, Jewish wedding ceremonies were held outdoors, and the chuppah created an intimate, sanctified space.
