Shielded under the label of neutrality during World War II Spain has avoided criticism of its role during the Holocaust for too long. The Franco regime (1939-1975) succeeded in forging a narrative that safely removed the nation from the horrors of the Holocaust. It was not until 2000 that the Holocaust gained presence in Spanish life.
