The political and social turmoils of 1956 forced more than 51,000 Jews out of Poland. Nearly 57,000 remained, adjusting to the new situation. From 1964 things began to go seriously wrong. Jews were gradually eliminated from the Central Committee and replaced by staunch Stalinists. The antisemitic nature of these changes was publicly revealed in 1968. Jews who lost jobs found it difficult to find new ones. The Politburo established a special commission that severely resticted the hiring of Jews dismissed from executive positions. The antisemitic regime launched by Gromulka was a great embarrassment to the regime and to Poland, which several centuries earlier had provided a home for Jews expelled from other countries
