Biography of his grandfather, David Oppenheim, who was a classical scholar, Austro-Hungarian army war veteran, one time member of Freud's Wednesday Group and friend and supporter of Alfred Adler. Singer explores the difficulties of free inquiry in the circles of both Freud and Adler. As he set out to find out more about the life of a man he never knew, Singer was transported back to the Vienna of his grandfather. Examining this culture and its fate, forces Singer to confront one of the foundations of his own thiught: How much can we rely on human reason?
