DescriptionPhotograph. Chancie Mayer wearing a theatrical costume, with a slightly roguish expression on her face. Dated 1922.
The Mayer family was comprised of Jacob (1902-1983) and Chancie (1906-1965) who were parents to Dora (b. 1937) and Janet (b. 1945). The Mayer family were Jewish, with Jacob originating from Austria and Chancie (nee Bobryker) from Poland. Following Chancie’s emigration from Poland to Austria in 1925, the pair married in 1937. Jacob manufactured umbrellas and ties from the premises of his own business in Vienna and was highly regarded for his ‘extraordinary competence’ in the trade. Due to increasing antisemitism in Austria and elsewhere, the Mayers were effectively coerced into leaving Austria. The documents, such as the eviction notice of 1938, trace their story. The family immigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1939. In 1945, they had a second child Janet, the donor of this collection. On 22 May, 1965, Chancie died aged 58. Jacob died aged 80 on 12 January, 1983.
