DescriptionPhotograph. Black-and-white. Lea Holst depicted in portrait 24 January, 1962.
Lea Holst (1892-1970) was possibly born in Russia or the Netherlands but almost certainly appears to have been of Dutch extraction. There is little information about her life available. Her maiden name was Levina showing her Jewish roots. She was married to Alex Holst (c. 1889-1937), a merchant, and lived in the Philippines from 1931 (and possibly earlier). Alex died from pulmonary tuberculosis in 1937. Following the outbreak of World War II, Lea was imprisoned as a civilian at Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila. The camp was liberated by the Americans in early 1945 and Lea was evacuated to Sydney, Australia, where she arrived on 6 April. She stayed at a series of guest houses in Paddington, Potts Point, Neutral Bay and Sydney CBD for the rest of her life. It also seems that she had a connection to the Queen Wilhelmina Hospital near Centennial Park, used for the treatment of Dutch soldiers. Lea died aged 77 or 78 on 31 May, 1970. She is buried at Rookwood Cemetery.
