ОписаниеOne-year-old Eve Weiss with her great-grandmother Elise Schach?, Vienna, November 1938.
Edith Seligmann and Kurt Weiss married in 1933. Both worked in her father’s factory. Their daughter Eve was born in November 1937. When German troops marched into Austria on 12 March 1938, repressive German laws, persecution and violence were extended to Austrian Jews. Friedrich Seligmann was forced to close his business. In response to worsening conditions Edith and Kurt decided to immigrate.
The family departed Vienna on 13 December 1938 travelling via plane to Venice and from Venice via train to Genoa. They were inspected at the Italian border to ensure that were not carrying any jewellery or gold. They then travelled on the Dutch ship, Christiaan Huygens, via Port Said stopping in Colombo, Sri Lanka, arriving on the P+O Strathaird in Australia in January 1939. Eva Weiss was one-year-old on this trip. This selection of images depicts Eve with her grandparents and on the ship bound for Australia.
