DescriptionDiploma in Men’s and Women’s Tailoring awarded to Jakubowi Szczeciniarzowi (Yankel Szczeciniarz) who later anglicized his name to John Nash. He undertook his training in Dzierzoniow, Poland where he was repatriated after surviving the Holocaust in the Soviet Union. He lived there for 5 years with his wife Shayndel (Sonia Nash), his son Chaim (Harry Nash) who was born in the Soviet Union in 1944. His daughter Rivke (Rita Nash) was born in Dzierzoniow in 1947. The family emigrated to Australia arriving in Sydney in May 1950.
To comply with Jewish Welfare requirements, John worked for several clothing factories in Sydney for around two years, while Shayndel did piece work at home. In circa 1953/4 he was able to establish his own business in partnership with a Mr Akierman. The business was called NA Fashions (for Nash and Akierman) and was located in Oxford Street, close to what is now Whitlam Square. The original building has been demolished. NA Fashions did not have its own lines but manufactured women’s suits, dresses and skirts for well-known labels such as John J. Hilton and Sports Fashions. The partnership was dissolved around 1960 and John and Sonia, who was an accomplished seamstress, set up a small enterprise in the Royal Arcade, Pitt Street, a site now occupied by the Hilton Hotel. They continued to manufacture dresses and suits for big fashion labels until John’s ill health forced them to close the business and retire in the early 1970s.
