DescriptionPhoto of a red-brick house on 22 Fagel Street, Leiden, The Netherlands, taken on 22 March 1997. This was the house the Korten's lived in during World War II, and the house that 10-year-old Marianna Katwijk lived in when she was rescued by the Dutch Underground and brought to the Korten household in December 1942.
When Marianna arrived wearing a Star of David badge attached to her coat, Hermine Korten immediately took it off and gave it to her 12-year-old son, Hans, to hide in his room. Frederik and Hermine Korten treated Marianna like their own daughter, and passed her off as a relative from Rotterdam. They managed to convince the local school to accept her without the necessary registration. In 1946 they learned that Marianna’s father had survived and the Kortens were able to return her to him in Amsterdam where they resumed their lives together, however, her mother had been murdered in Auschwitz.
On 20 July 2014, Yad Vashem recognised Frederik and Hermine Korten as Righteous Among the Nations for saving the life of Marianna Katwijk.
