DescriptionThis is a replica of a letter from Meta Boehm, Edgar Boehm’s mother. It was written to Edgar and his wife Irene on the occasion of the birth of their daughter, Dorrit. At the time, Edgar, Irene, and baby Dorrit were living in Shanghai as political refugees. Meta was still living in Germany, in Berlin. Meta notes her relief that the young couple were able to get out of Germany safe, and laments her own misfortune at not being able to secure a Japanese visa in order to join them in Shanghai.
Meta Boehm (nee Bendix) was born in Burgsteinfurt, Germany in 1879. Meta was married to Siegmund Boehm, who owned a successful department store in Barth, Germany. Meta had two children, Edgar and Alice. In 1939, Edgar immigrated to Shanghai with his wife, Irene Rothholz and her family. In 1940, Meta’s granddaughter, Dorrit, was born. During this time, Meta was living in Berlin, Germany. On the 25th of January 1942, Meta was deported to Riga, Latvia. She was murdered on the outskirts of Riga by the Nazis sometime between 1942 and 1944.
