Creator Paul Fischer
DescriptionTestimony and memoir written by Paul Fischer in 1994, comprising in part the genealogical history of his family as well as he and his family's experiences of life under the Nazis in Austria and later the Japanese in Shanghai. The work took four years to complete.
Incorporating both original and reproduced material, this bound and typed 128 page manuscript, blends both memoir and photo album into one. Three copies of the original were made, one for each of Paul’s children and his brother. He has also recorded an audio testimony, included in the Museum’s oral history archive. Paul’s writing is deeply reflective and personal, woven into a subjective narrative, shifting from first person to third. In his opening pages he explains his rationale for writing and the often poetic licence applied to his work in representing the experiences of his parents. The photographs capture life in Vienna and the family's time in Shanghai, including the aftermath of the city's bombing in 1945.
