Prior to the outbreak of war Bedrich had tried to escape his native Czechoslovakia to Palestine where his brother was already. He was intercepted by the British and interned in Mauritius. He was released when he enlisted in the Czech contingent of the British army and was transferred to the United Kingdom. He attempted to stay in England after the war but was unable. He managed to get decommissioned to Palestine.
