DescriptionBedrich Albera (Fritz) skiers association membership card for 1937 and 1938. The card is stamp by the Jewish sports association Makkabi and he has paid his dues with both Makabi stamps and general contributions. The back of the document is another Maccabi stamp for accident insurance premiums.
The Maccabi sport association became an important part of European Jewish life at the turn of the 19th century. A driving factor was the Zionist movement and the argument for a Muskeljudentum (muscular Jewry) to effect the regeneration of the physique and character of Jews.
Clubs in Bohemia and Moravia were organized into the “Western Austrian circle,” which in 1913 consisted of 2,500 members in 23 clubs, and these branches were also instructed to adopt the name Maccabi. The 1937 edition of the Jüdische Sportbuch (Jewish Sports Book) noted 200,000 members of Maccabi clubs in 27 countries.
Ideologically and financially, Maccabi societies encouraged emigration and the promotion of the Jewish community in Palestine. This urgency increased with Hitler’s rise to power. Bedrich in his written testimony talks about how it is through Maccabi that he is migrating to Palestine.
