DescriptionReturned from Active Service brooch given to Braham Moses in commemoration of his service during World War II.
The Returned from Active Service brooch is given to Australians who have served in war. It is worn when the wearing of service medals is not possible or appropriate.
This brooch is part of a larger collection pertaining to the lives of Braham and Arthur Moses. There is significantly more information about Braham than Arthur. Braham's life is chronicled in his own diary held by the SJM Library as well an Australian Jewish Historical Society article titled 'Braham Moses’ Visit to Palestine in 1938: An Australian Jews Perspective’. Braham was one of six children, born in 1909 to Philip (a dentist) and Esther Moses in Waihi, New Zealand where they lived for a short period. The Moses family then moved to Bondi in Sydney, Australia. Braham matriculated from Sydney Boys High School in 1927 and went on to read Economics at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1932. In 1938 Braham went overseas for a holiday as well as to study hotel management, the events of which are related in his diary. He married his wife Wilhelmina in 1940 with whom he had two children, and enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942, serving in Papua New Guinea. He was discharged in late 1944 and returned to Sydney to take over the family hotel business as both his parents had passed away from natural causes during the war. Braham was also active with the New South Wales Friends of the Hebrew University, a Jewish organisation. He died in 1986, aged 76.
