DescriptionDenis Frederick Carver (born Fritz Schnitzer) born on 11 November 1909 in Vienna, Austria served as Austrian Honorary Consul in Sydney 1969 to 1 March 1977.
He was awarded with the Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria (Goldenes Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich) by Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger dated 11 October 1977, the latter at the special request of Foreign Minister Willibald Pahr to reward Mr Carver for his outstanding merits in providing the community of roughly 15.000 people of Austrian descent in his jurisdiction with consular assistance.
Since being interned in Shanghai, China due to Nazi occupation of Austria in 1938 and the persecution of European Jewry, Carver had escaped from the horrors of the Holocaust in Europe. It is interesting that Carver would retain such a loyal connection to his country of birth, Austria after his citizenship was revoked as well as knowing the horrors performed by non-Jewish Austrians during World War 2 against Jews and other victims.
