DescriptionDenis Frederick Carver (born Fritz Schnitzer) was born on 11 November 1909 in Vienna, Austria and served as Austrian Honorary Consul in Sydney from 1969 to March 1977.
This letter was sent to Carver on 30 November 1972, by the Austrian Minister.
He was awarded with the Decoration of Honour in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria (Silbernes Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich) by Federal President Franz Jonas dated 5 August 1972 for his position as Austrian Honorary Consul.
Since being interned in Shanghai, China due to Nazi occupation of Austria in 1938 and the persecution of European Jewry, Carver had escaped from the horrors of the Holocaust in Europe. It is interesting that Carver would retain such a loyal connection to his country of birth, Austria after his citizenship was revoked and knowing the horrors performed by non-Jewish Austrians during World War 2 against Jews and other victims.
