DescriptionHermann Elter was a Polish Jew who migrated from Galicia (Poland) during the early 20th century to Vienna, Austria where he gained residency and citizenship.
This diary turned ledger dates from 1933-1939. It contains economic details on the running, management and maintenance of Hermann’s investment properties on 5 Wimmergasse 15 and 16 Vienna, Austria. It also contains a reference to Jewish institutions in Sydney, Australia such as Maccabean Hall and the Australian Jewish Welfare Society.
In 1938 Elter declares Grundbuchsauszug, which is an Austrian Land Register, of his two Wimmergasse properties which were to become ‘aryanised’ assets to the Nazi regime. The reporting of ‘Aryanised’ assets was the result of issues in foreign currency shortages in Germany and of the Anschluss. Forced emigration and confiscation of Jewish property would ensure that these assets would remain in Germany.
Using a diary like this was quite common in the pre-World War II period.
