TitleOil Lamp
DescriptionBrass Oil lamp. According to the label on the box in which it is stored, it is antique. It has a black plate pierced with a variety of motifs, commencing with the Mihrab (Islamic arch) motif along the base, above which rises scrolled foliage adorned with two flowers, terminating in a crown flanked by two cockerels. The back plate is lit by a row of eight oil pans, each with a well and a protruding lip to receive the wax. The row of pans has been cast separately and is secured by projections which fit into slots in the back and side plates. The shamash is situated at the base of the crown that surmounts the back plate. The side plates commence with an Islamic arch crowned by the hand of Fatima, an amulet intended to ward off evil spirits. This style of Chanukiah was originally intended to be hung against a wall.
