Certificate of Naturalization
Object numberM2016/036:070
TitleCertificate of Naturalization
DescriptionThis is an official Certificate of Naturalization from the Commonwealth of Australia awarded to Benjamin Pszenny granting him citizenship to the Commonwealth of Australia. It states that Mr Pszenny has ‘formally renounced his allegiance to the Republic of Poland and has sworn allegiance to His Majesty King George VI.” It was signed by the Minister of State for Immigration and dated 23rd August 1946. It has a red wax seal on the bottom left corner and on the reverse side is a list of ‘particulars relating to the applicant’, including name, occupation, age, spouse and children included in the certificate. Benjamin’s eyes are noted as ‘brown’ and his hair ‘dark’, and includes a ‘specimen signature’. Roman Pszenny whose birthday is noted as 28th of December 1936 is included in the certificate. It would appear to be significant that after the end of the war such a definite act as Naturalisation, followed by name changes, was pursued by the family, showing no intention of returning permanently to Poland.
