DescriptionPostcard of the Flotta Lauro ship “Surriento”, one of the many Australia bound post-war migrant ships. It brought the donor Rita Nash and her family to Australia. The card was postmarked at Genoa Railway Station and dated 5 April 1950. The “Surriento” began its voyage on that day sailing via Colombo (Ceylon) and Singapore. The ship arrived in Sydney on 6 May 1950.
The postcard was written in Yiddish by Rita’s mother Shayndel Szczeciniarz (Sonia Nash) and was sent to Noech Rychter, Sonia’s brother-in-law in Sydney, who, together with his brother Dr Oscar Rychter, had helped to organize the family’s emigration to Australia. Some years later Noech must have returned the card to Shayndel.
The text of the message, written in Yiddish, is poetic and poignant, expressing their hopes for a better life together:
Dear brother-in-law Noech
We are getting on the boat on 4 April at 8 o’clock in the morning. We are happy that the time is closer when we will be together. Dear brother-in-law, we hope that you will also be happy and we will again build a life and throw away the wandering stick. We thank from the bottom of our heart your brother and sister-in law who have put together the effort to save us out of Poland.
Keep well
