DescriptionTransit visa granted for travel through Japan. The document contains two certificates issued by the Polish Consulate in Kovno, stating that Mr Jakob Sapir, Mrs Tola Sapir and their four-year-old son Piotr-Seweryn Sapir are Polish Citizens. These certificates were issued for travel purposes in lieu of passports.
The certificate was issued on the 13 November 1939. It contains a stamp of the British legation in Lithuania and is signed by the British Charge d’Affairs. Official Polish Embassy stamps in Tokyo and British legation in Lithuania stamps are affixed and signed by the British Charge d’Affairs in Lithuania. There are also official transit visa stamps of Sugihara, the Japanese Consul in Kaunas, Lithuania.
In 1939, the Sapir family travelled from Poland to Vilno, Lithuania, then on to Moscow; then from Vladivostock to Kobe, Japan and eventually they arrived in Shanghai in 1941. The family lived in the French quarter in Shanghai, but were later moved into the Hongkew ghetto. Peter (Piotr) attended St. Francis Xavier's school, run by English priests, outside the ghetto boundary. Jakob earned a living in Shanghai running a Polish kitchen. The family immigrated to Sydney in 1947 aboard the 'Hwa Lien'.
