DescriptionThis is an unidentified photograph donated by Naomi Reiss. The donor found this photo, together with two similar ones, in her parents’ estate after they died. The parents, Frieda and Solomon Felzenstein were born in Poland. They escaped to Russia before the Germans entered Poland. They were never deported to a concentration camp. The donor is not aware of the provenance of the image.
The b/w photo depicts three men (possibly Kapos) standing around a naked corpse which is really a skeleton, on a stretcher. The dead body is showing suffering beyond words being ready to be shoveled into the large brick oven. The standing men do not look like camp prisoners, although one of them is wearing the stripy camp uniform jacket. The men are clearly posing for the photographer. They are wearing protective gloves.
The photo bears similarities with the series of the United States official photographs issued from the camps at the time of liberation in spring 1945. It is possible that this photo was taken in the Buchenwald concentration camp. However, a set of similar and few identical images M2005/045 have been identified as originated in concentration camp Dachau.
This image is from a group of three photographs which were possibly taken at the time of the liberation of the Buchenwald or Bergen -Belsen Concentration Camp. They are historically significant as they graphically depict the atrocities that took place in these concentration camps. It also demonstrates how the Allied forces collected evidence of this event.
