Object numberM2015/044
DescriptionThis is a popular souvenir album with olive wood covers and actual pressed flowers which have been intricately arranged, along with a description below the flowers. The covers are fashioned from olive wood with bevelled edges and a centrally mounted inlaid design featuring the view of Jerusalem. Each flower design is protected with a special wax-like paper page. At the back of the cover is a single name Jerusalem written in an ornate writing.
The first page reads ‘Flowers and Views of the Holy Land'. There are twelve double-pages all of which contain a panoramatic image of Jerusalem's various holy places and pressed flowers from different locations in Jerusalem. The spine is dark cotton. The provenance is unknown.
The book is undated, but from research we understand that, it was probably made between 1914 and 1940. This type of items seems to be a popular souvenir with soldiers serving in the Middle East during the first and second world wars. It has also been often collected by tourists who made the pilgrimage to Palestine in the early part of the 20th century. \
