TitleScout Camp May 1960
DescriptionBronze (?) trophy awarded to Peter Rosenthal, May 1960. The cast sculpture shows a young scout boy wearing scouts uniform, hands on his hips and hat on head. The wooden plinth, inscribed with a metal label, is engraved 'Peter Rosenthal Point Score Winner Camp May 1960'.
Peter was 11 years old and a member of the 3rd Judean Scout group which is still running as the 3rd Rose bay Judean Scouts catering for Sydney's Eastern suburbs.
The trophy belonged to Peter Rosenthal whose mother-in-law, Yvonne Engelman, donated it to the Museum.
Peter was born 11 January 1949. Mr Keen was in charge of the group and his son Paul Keen was a troop leader. Peter attended Vaucluse Boys High School, which at the time was a public school but with more than 50% Jews. His parents were both born in Sydney but grandparents came from Scotland, England and France, and also from Romania, Ukraine and Poland. Peter had his barmitzva at The Great Synagogue, Sydney, in 1962. He recalls Scout camp in May 1960 and the occasion of winning the trophy, he was surprised and proud. This trophy represents a significant link in the history of Jewish people in Australia. The 3rd Judean Scout group was founded prior 1960 and was based in the Maccabean Hall, the very home of the Sydney Jewish Museum. It was later in 1964 incorporated with the Rose Bay group into the 3rd Rose Bay Judean Scouts which was founded on 23 November 1964. Today, this group is the only remaining Jewish Scouts group in Sydney and is based in Bondi. The Sydney Jewish Scouts group was founded in 1908, only one year after scouting was established in England. The Scouts' values which are encompassed in the Scouts Promise: 'to live by Scout law, provide the base for a member of society to live an honest, respectful life and to help other people where one is able' are as valid today as they were more than a century ago.
