DescriptionPostcard from father in Lodz Ghetto, to his children in Kobe, Japan, dated 7 May 1941. Postmarked 9th May 1941 Litzmannstadt, very concerned as he has not heard from his family for a few weeks.
Jakob Sapir, his wife Tola and son Peter, travelled in the late 1930s from Poland to Vilno in Lithuania, then on to Moscow. They then travelled from Vladivostock to Kobe, Japan and eventually arrived in Shanghai in 1941. They lived in the French quarter in Shanghai, but were later moved into the Hongkew ghetto. Peter Sapir attended St. Francis Xavier's school, run by English priests, which was outside the ghetto boundary. Jakob Sapir earned a living in Shanghai running a Polish kitchen. The family left Shanghai in 1947, aboard the "Hwa Lien" ship, migrating to Sydney, Australia.

Heartily beloved children!
We are well but very concerned about you. For weeks already we have had no news, yet we are writing every week, we feel very abandoned, even from ESTHA we have no news for many months.
From TECIA SLOBODIKA there is no word. She does not remember her promises. How are you dear children, how do you live? Have you go the means? That worries us a lot. Write about everything. I am looking for something to do because I depend on that. Mrs ZUNGE we have also not heard from.
We greet and kiss with all our hearts your loving father. Dear mother is writing you separately.
