This Sefer Torah No. 1054 was rescued from the synagogue in Uhlířské Janovice, former Czechoslovakia during the occupation of Bohemia and Moravia by the Nazis. The number 1054 refers to the 'Czech Memorial Scrolls Westminster Synagogue London 1964-5724'. The scroll was inscribed in 1900. It is not known whether the Torah came to Australia with this particular binder, or whether it was made here.
Uhlířské Janovice is a small town about 1 hour drive south east from Prague. Former Jewish presence is documented by few remnants of the Jewish cemetery.
In 1964, 1,564 Czech Sefer Torah’s and 400 Torah binders were sold by the Czechoslovak government after long negotiations and shipped to London by the Memorial Scrolls Trust at Westminster Synagogue, for restoration and distribution. Many of them have been distributed throughout the world as memorials to the Jewish tragedy.
The scroll, binder and mantle were on a permanent loan from the Czech Memorial Torah Scrolls Trust, London to the Strathfield Synagogue from 1989-2015. After the closure of the synagogue these items were placed in the care of the Sydney Jewish Museum in May 2015.
