TitleOstasiatischer Lloyd
DescriptionNewspaper in German from Shanghai, "Osteasiatische Lloyd", 27th June 1940. Collected by Edgar and Irene Boehm, Jewish refugees in Shanghai from 1939 until 1946 when they migrated to Australia.
This is an interesting historical issue of this paper. It gives full details of the German-French Cease Fire conditions in June 1940, when France, barely 9 months after the outbreak of World War II already surrendered to Germany. Marshall Petain’s appeal to the French population is recorded in full. At this stage Shanghai was still not occupied by Japan. There appears a call-up notice of German nationals to report to the German Consulate in Shanghai. The paper contains details of the Japanese progress in the war with China mentioning the bombardment of Chungking and progress towards Indo China. German air raids on British targets are mentioned as well as British attacks on German targets. The paper appears pro-German describing how Paris has returned to “normal” after the German occupation. A German “Pension”(Boarding House ) advertises a vacancy for an “Arian” couple.
