DescriptionThis is an original colorful artwork on the armorial bearings of Sir Samuel Sydney Cohen. A rampant heraldic lion is flanked by wattle and armorial helmet. The inscriprion reads THE LORD BLESS THEE in a banner and under the coat of arms in three lines, The Armorial Bearings of SIR SAMUEL SYDNEY COHEN of Sydney, New South Wales; signature of Gerald.W.Wollaston in the right corner and 'Collegeg of Arms' in the left. Sir Gerald Woods Wollaston, KCB, KCVO (1874-1957) was a long-serving officer of arms at the College of Arms in London.
Sir Samuel Cohen was born in Sydney in 1869. He was an accomplished businessman and he was active in a number of charities, both Jewish and non-Jewish causes. He was knighted in the King’s coronation honours in 1937. The Sydney Jewish Museum also has in the collection the parchment warrant scroll which was provided to Sir Samuel Cohen Sir Algar Henry Stafford Howard granting him the coat of arms which can be used by him and his descendants. The scroll has three of his large red wax seals attached to the bottom by blue ribbon. The design of the seal is depicted in the upper left corner.
The warrant is a historically significant document recording a high recognition of a member of the Jewish community in Australia at the outbreak of the WW2.
Sir Samuel Cohen was grandfather of the donor.
