DescriptionThis is the 20th Anniversary (1941-1961) Jubilee programme of the Sydney "Kleines Wiener Theater ". This programme features a brief history of the Theater, with numerous photos of actors, persons involved and performances. A page is devoted to recognising the fact that no one involved in the Theater had been paid and that 15,000 pounds had been donated to a number of organisations (listed on page 9 of the programme). This programme is one of many which had belonged to the donor's mother. The Viennese Theater remained operational to the mid-1980s, providing a cultural link to the home country and Europe to migrants/refugees since most plays were performed in German. The donor’s parents, Edith and Frederick Sowey, were great supporters of the Theatre, which had been founded by Karl Bittman and Alfred Baring “as a symbol of a vibrant and optimistic cultural era” (words of the donor). The list of recipients of the Company's donations shows that the Kleines Wiener Theatre considered itself truly a part of Sydney - viz. inclusion of the Sydney Opera House Appeal, the NSW National Opera Company and the Chair for Australian Literature amongst other beneficiaries.
