DescriptionThis is one of a collection of programmes of the Sydney Viennese Theatre (Kleines Wiener Theater), which had belonged to the donor’s mother. This one, of a cabaret/review "Karussell der Zeit" was performed by Freddi Durra, a popular star born in Breslau and now resident in Israel. There were seven performances in Nov. 1978 at the St James Playhouse, with the final one being in English. The Viennese Theatre, operational from 1941 to the mid-1980s, provided a cultural link to the home country and Europe to migrants/refugees since most plays were performed in German. The donor’s parents, Edith and Frederick Sowey, were great supporters of the Theatre, which had been founded by Karl Bittman and Alfred Baring “as a symbol of a vibrant and optimistic cultural era” (words of the donor).
