DescriptionThis programme of "Zalmen, or the Madness of God", a play written by Elie Wiesel, was jointly presented (in English) by the Viennese Theatre and The Sydney Jewish Theatre in November 1977 at the St James Playhouse. It is a shining example of Sydney's Jewish cultural life. This is one of a collection of programmes of the Sydney Viennese Theatre (Kleines Wiener Theater), which had belonged to the donor’s mother. The Viennese Theatre, operational from 1941 to the mid-1980s, provided a cultural link to the home country and Europe to migrants/refugees since most plays were performed in German. The donor’s parents, Edith and Frederick Sowey, were great supporters of the Theatre, which had been founded by Karl Bittman and Alfred Baring “as a symbol of a vibrant and optimistic cultural era” (words of the donor).
