DescriptionThis Limited Edition (Plate Number 0179) commemorative ceramic plate honours the humanitarian work of Raoul Wallenberg. The design (Australian) is based on a plaque by Mr Imre Varga, Budapest 1988. The obverse side shows a face, a Latin phrase ("DE PROFUNDIS AD TE CLAMO DOMINE". ie From the depths I cry to Thee, Lord) and Raoul Wallenberg's name. The reverse side describes his assignment once arrived in Budapest, on July 9th, 1944, "to save as many Jews as possible from the Nazi death camps." It further states "His unmatched courage and humanitarianism saved 100,000 lives, both Jewish and Christian, from Hitler's extermination camps.
On January 17th, 1945 he was taken into protective custody by the Russians and since that date has not been seen as a free man." The plate belonged to Blanka Kline, mother of the donor.
