This item belonged to the donor’s father, Victor Michalowicz (later changed to Avigdor Mitchell Michalowicz) who was a Holocaust Survivor. Born in Poland, Victor was involved in Zionist youth groups before the war and served in the Polish Army. He experienced anti-Semitism growing up in Poland. He survived the war and after, went to Israel and served in the army. In Australia he changed his name to Mitchell. He explains more about this item in his testimony which he recorded with the Shoah Foundation, which is listed under the name Avigdor Mitchell Michalowicz. The interview is in English, Yiddish and Polish.
After the war, in the DP Camp Landshut, he met and fell in love with Edzia (Edith) Fainsilber, a survivor from Poland and their families were somewhat connected before the war. They were married and their son Shlomo was born in the camp. They eventually migrated to Australia.
