ОписаниеThis photo depicts three malnourished looking soldiers wearing only trousers who were liberated from Stalag 11B [a prisoner of war camp]. The caption on the back of this photo identifies the man closest to the foreground as being British soldier Private W. Buchanan.
There is a carbon-copy caption attached on to the back of the image which reads:

THE LIBERATION OF STALAG 11B.
On April 16th the first prisoner of war camp containing British prisoners was liberated by advancing tanks of a British Armoured Brigade. The camp is Stalag 11B. Just south of Fallingbostel [district town of the Heidekreis district in the German state of Lower Saxony], which is about 10 miles south west of Soltau [a mid-sized town in the Lüneburg Heath in the district of Heidekreis, in Lower Saxony, Germany], containing 3,000 British and American prisoners, and also thousands of Russians, Frenchmen, Poles and Belgians. Among the British are men captured at Dunkirk in Africa on the Normandy beaches and at Arnhem. Picture shows: Pte. W. Buchanan of Glasgow who is suffering from malnutrition."
