Creator Maximilian Feuerring
DescriptionUntitled and undated painting by Maximilian Feuerring, signed lower right M Feuerring. The oil on board painting depicts a Rabbi (Priest) or Jewish spiritual leader, identified by his long beard and side curls (‘payot’). It is painted in an expressionist manner with bold and heightened colour use and with a strong black linear outline of the figure. The man holds a book in both hands, presumably a ‘Sidur’ (Jewish prayer book). The name of the sitter is not known. The long grey beard implies a wise man; the eyes could be read as either open or closed. The heightened head covering suggests that underneath hides a fez, the male headgear of Jews of Sephardi heritage.
Painted circa 1950-1954
Feuerring is one of the post WWII artists who migrated from Europe to Australia. He brought a resilient, experimental approach to his art and teaching. Born in Poland in 1896, he arrived in Australia in 1950. He died in 1985.
