DescriptionLetter from The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, recommending Hirsz and Anneliese Roth for immigration to Australia. It confirms their status as refugees, a consequence of oppression and persecution by the Nazis. It also states that to the best of their knowledge, "nothing detrimental against the couple is known to us; they have never been in prison or in a lunatic asylum."
The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, otherwise referred to as ‘Joint’ or JDC, is the largest non-political Jewish organisation dedicated to assisting Jews in trouble across the globe. Established in 1914, its initial purpose was to support Jewish populations in the Middle East and Eastern Europe during the First World War. In the lead up to WWII, their aid became a crucial lifeline to many Jewish civilians suffering under the growing oppression of Nazism. By 1940, the ‘Joint’ had secured safe havens for refugee transit in over 40 countries. As the war progressed and as the US entered the conflict, the JDC became a clandestine organisation; cooperating with various organisations, governments and underground resistance on the provision of aid and relief.
By 1954, over 17,000 Jews had arrived from Europe and Shanghai.
