TitleTrauer Album
DescriptionThis is a German Yahrzeit (anniversary of death) book-calendar, printed in Berlin. Trauer is German for ‘period of mourning’. The book commemorates the death of family members, Salo Jacob, Rosa Jacob and Fritz Jacob, over a period of 50 years. It was donated to the museum by Jacob and Rosa’s grandson, John Roth.
The Yahrzeit is traditionally observed on the annual date of a relative’s death, according to the Hebrew calendar. There are other rituals performed as part of the commemoration, including the lighting of a Yahrzeit candle, fasting and the recital of mourning prayers.
