DescriptionA medical record (Krankenstand) issued in Theresienstadt for Greta (Grete) Kohn, The card records details of Greta's medical treatments over approximately a year period (year unknown but likely 25 April 1943 - 31 March 1944). This card documents the nature of the Nazi's administration, not their care for health of the inmates. Clearly, the Nazis worried about infectious diseases being spread quickly if unchecked. They also needed to maintain a strong workforce to run the enormous machinery of the camp. As a further identification of the card holder, Greta's Transport number (AAv889) is recorded next to her name. Each of the 12 entries (representing various medical treatments) are dated and signed by a doctor.
This medical record documents the rigid nature of the Nazi’s administration. All aspects of life in the ghetto were strictly managed and regulated. Every movement required permission and needed to be recorded. The Jewish self-administration worked under the Nazi control and was charged with implementation of many ghetto’s regulations and restrictions.
