DescriptionPhotograph of Gary Levi, Scout Leader, wearing his scout shirt (Object M2013/008:001), 3rd Rose Bay Judean Scout Troop, featuring 194 badges, 1960s - 1980s. His facial expression alludes to his dedication to his leadership role within the Scouting Group.
From its early days the Judean Scouts played a pivotal role for young people in the Sydney Jewish community. With 8 groups spread between the Eastern Suburbs and the North Shore it provided a social hub for Jewish youth in the days before the rise of Jewish day schools and organised youth movements. Typically whole families were active in the Judean Scouting movement with boys joining as Cubs, then Scouts with parents acting as leaders and parent supporters.
As part of the broader Australian Scouting movement, the Sydney Judean Scouts have contributed to the development of the Australian community by encouraging acceptance, tolerance and friendship and inclusivity for all. Within the Jewish community the Judean Scouts and Girl Guides gave boys and girls from all walks of life an opportunity to mix socially, learn new skills and develop pride in themselves and their community. In particular, it gave boys and girls from non-observant homes an opportunity to learn more about their Judaism, sharing in various activities to mark highlights of the Jewish Year.
