DescriptionBlack and white photo (reproduction) of Joseph Symon in 1940 at the age of 15 leading a Shabbat service in a Jewish Boy Scout camp, Hungary. He is wearing a Tallit and standing in front of a home-made Bimah.
Born 1925 in Budapest, Hungary, Joseph (Joe) was deported to a forced labour camp in June 1944. He escaped and joined the underground in October 1944. He immigrated to Australia in 1959. “I was a boy scout leader. I had great use of what I learned throughout my life. When I was escaping and hiding in the forest, I used my boy scout knowledge in the middle of the forest to orient myself to find the nearest township”, Joseph Symon, November 2015
