Object numberM2012/010:075
DescriptionTyped notice to the Council Elder reporting on the poor state of the gutter near Room 21a. It states that, "For some days we found that the corridor to the gutter to the right is filled with urine, food and water. We put it to the rooms adjoining it that deposits of this kind are strictly forbidden." To prevent unpleasant consequences we request that this kind of thing is instantly stopped. Letter is dated 18 March 1945 and signed in pencil.
Stamped Building B5. The letter is crossed out.
On reverse side are hand-written names and addresses.
This documents the rigid nature of the Nazi’s administration. All aspects of life in the ghetto were strictly managed and regulated. Every movement required permission and needed to be recorded, day after day, hour after hour… Similarly like other documents in Eva Gertler collection, it is assumed that this notice was sent to the Terezin Ghetto Jewish self-administration by either Moric or Greta Kohn, although the signature is illegible. The Jewish self-administration worked under the Nazi control and was charged with implementation of many ghetto’s regulations and restrictions.
This note may have been kept for the handwritten addresses on the reverse.
The card was brought to Australia in 1948 by Moric Kohn.
