ОписаниеDavid Bloomfield enlisted in the Australian Army on 29 April 1941 and served in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. A copy of his memoir is available in the file.
According to David Bloomfield’s Rabaul Diary (page 10) on Sunday 4 January 1942 his troop was the first Australian troop to engage the Japanese but without success. The first plane the troop shot down was on Wednesday 21 January 1942 (page 17).
David Bloomfield was presented with this azimuth ring at a luncheon which followed the ceremony at Bita Paka commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Japanese landing in Rabaul. The presentation was made by Fred Field, President 2/22 Bn Lark Force Association (page 69).
The ring was recovered by Mr Brian Bennett, a civilian living in Rabual, whose hobby was going into the jungle to search for lost aircraft. The azimuth ring is from the Mitsubishi ‘Sally’ Ki-21 medium bomber, which carried a crew of five, shot down by the A/A bty on Wednesday 21 January 1942. An azimuth ring is a metal ring which encircles and supports the aircraft’s compass.
